Maria Abakumova Mariya Vasiliyevna Abakumova is a Russian javelin thrower. She won the Gold medal at 2011 World Championships in Athletics in Daegu, South Korea where she threw a Russian national and World Championships record of 71.99 metres. She also won the Olympic silver medal in 2008. Abajumova trains in Krasnodar with Aleksander Sinitsyn.

Mariya Abakumova was born on 15 January 1986 in Stavropol. Her mother and 2 aunts attended track and field events and the older aunt Nadezhda Abakumova still holds the region record (8.6 sec) in women's 60-Meter Hurdles. Mariya was brought up by her mother, a sports trainer and had her first success in sports at the very early age.

Her first sports were swimming and gymnastics. When she was 10 she started track and fields with the athletic couch Irina Komarova. The first 3 or 4 years Mariya tried various track and field sports and showed good results in hurdling, long jump, shot put. She won women's 60-Meter Hurdles at the junior tournament in Shakhty, Russia and later became a gold winner at shot put at Russian junior championship in 1998. However Mariya Abakumova hit her leg during the tournament and had to give up hurdling for a while. This was the time she first tried javelin. This was also success. After a year she set her first record at Russian junior championship in Vladimir, Russia with 51.60 m.

Since then Mariya Abakumova has had various achievements both in Russia and aboard. She won silver at 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, with 70.78 m. After which Abakumova was honored with the Medal of the Order "For Merits to the Fatherland" 2nd Class. Her victories also include bronze in World Championships Berlin, Germany with 66.06 m; she was first at Continental Cup in Croatia with 68.14 m and finally won the women's javelin title at the world championships in DAEGU, South Korea in 2011. There Abakumova upstaged world record holder Barbora Spotakova and won championships record of 71.99 metres, the second-longest throw of all time.
