April 1, 1873: Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff, a Russian-American composer, pianist, and conductor was born.

He was one of the finest pianists of his day and, as a composer, the last great representative of Russian late Romanticism in classical music. Rachmaninoff is known for Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganin., the Second and Third symphonies, The Isle of the Dead and others. He emigrated to the USA right after October Revolution in 1917.
