March 12, 1918: Following the Russian Revolution of 1917 Moscow became the capital of Russia again after Saint-Petersburg had been holding this status for 215 years.

During World War II (known in Russia as the Great Patriotic War), after the German invasion of the USSR, the Soviet State Defence Committee and the General Staff of the Red Army was located in Moscow.
