June 27, 1754: Grand Duchess Elizabeth, a daughter of Peter the Great approved the design of Winter Palace made by Italian architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli.

The palace was rebuilt 8 years later in what came to be known as the Elizabethan Baroque style; the green-and-white palace has the shape of an elongated rectangle.
