The film is Sergei Gerasimov's epic screening of Mikhail Sholokhov's novel And Quiet Flows the Don. The role of Axinia was played by Elina Bystritskaya, Ukrainian-born Russian actress. This was the best film of 1958 according to critics and film audience interviews.
