September 5, 1943: To celebrate the liberation of Russian cities Orel and Belgorod, the first fireworks in Moscow during the years of WWII took place.

September 5, 1698: Peter I of Russia introduced a tax of one hundred rubles for Boyars who sought to retain their beards.

Peter's visits to the West impressed upon him the notion that European customs were in several respects superior to Russian traditions.

He commanded all of his courtiers and officials to cut off their long beards and wear European clothing, causing his Boyars, who were very fond of their beards, great upset.
