February 7, 1795: The small Tatar settlement Khadjibey) that passed into the domain of the Russian Empire after the victory in Russo-Turkish War of 1792, was renamed into Odessa by the decree of Ekaterina II.
The city construction and development started and with the time Odessa became fourth largest city of Imperial Russia, after Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Warsaw. Odessa was a free port in the 19th century and a Soviet Naval base during the Soviet times. Nowadays Odessa is a major seaport located on the shore of the Black Sea and the fourth largest city in Ukraine with a population of 1,029,000.
